Babylon Takes Over Tokyo: Hardcore Punk Meets Street Fashion
On December 14, the streets of Harajuku, Tokyo were buzzing with excitement as Babylon, the iconic street brand/store/community-based concept, opened its first retail location. Founded by Lee Spielman and Garrett Stevenson, members of the hardcore punk band Trash Talk, Babylon has taken the fashion world by storm with its edgy designs and unique approach to retail.
From LA to Tokyo: A Global Expansion
The newly-opened Tokyo outpost marks Babylon’s third store ever, but it’s the first one outside of the U.S. This expansion is a testament to the brand’s growing popularity and global appeal. To celebrate the opening, a limited collaboration with VERDY will be available at the new store, featuring a black long-sleeve T-shirt, hoodie, and T-shirt adorned with Babylon and Wasted Youth’s logos.
A Collector’s Dream: The Special Edition Visty Vinyl Figure
But that’s not all – the Tokyo store also revealed a special edition Visty vinyl figure in Babylon’s signature all-black color scheme. Produced by SECRET BASE, this piece is a must-have for collectors, with its mix of matte and glossy finishes inspired by the interior details of the new store.
Living Between Two Worlds
In an exclusive interview, Lee and Garrett shared their excitement about the new store and their love for Japan. “At this point, one of us is in Japan every month and has been for the last few years or so,” Lee revealed. “Both Garrett and I officially have spots there, so we split our time living between LA and Tokyo.” With such a strong connection to the country, it’s no surprise that they chose Japan as their first international location.
Forever Under Construction: The Concept Behind the Store
The store’s concept, “Forever Under Construction,” is a reflection of Babylon’s philosophy of constant growth and evolution. “It’s about ongoing growth, constantly building and evolving,” Lee explained. The store’s design, created in collaboration with Italian architectural design firm ASA, features an oversized smashed-in hole on the side, symbolizing breaking through barriers and always pushing forward.
A True Experience
Garrett shared his experience working with ASA, saying, “From sketch to render to reality, the whole journey felt like we were building something that wasn’t just design, but a true experience.” The store’s design is a testament to the brand’s commitment to creating a space for growth and progress.
With its unique blend of hardcore punk and street fashion, Babylon’s Tokyo store is a must-visit for fashion enthusiasts and collectors alike. Don’t miss your chance to experience the energy and creativity of this iconic brand.
