Footwear Designer Salehe Bembury Turns Down Lucrative Nike Partnership to Launch Independent Brand, SPUNGE
Salehe Bembury, the renowned footwear designer behind collaborations with Versace, Crocs, and New Balance, has made a bold move by turning down a major partnership with Nike to launch his own independent sneaker company, SPUNGE. In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal, Bembury revealed that he declined a “multi-pronged partnership” with Nike a few years ago, which would have included collaborations with both LeBron James and Converse.
Bembury’s decision to pass on the offer was driven by his desire to have “full agency” over his creative vision and build his own community. He believed that in order to achieve his full potential as a designer, he needed complete control over his process. “My own brand will be 100% my vision,” Bembury stated. “I will get to build the community that I want to build, and have the conversations that I want to have and tell the stories that I want to tell.”
The Nike deal, while undoubtedly lucrative, did not align with Bembury’s vision and goals. Instead, he chose to build his own platform and launch SPUNGE, which will now directly compete with the very companies he once collaborated with. The brand’s debut model, the Osmosis, is a performance-lifestyle runner that embodies Bembury’s signature organic aesthetic. It was released through a raffle on October 13, marking a new era for designers who want to own their creative output without corporate compromise.
