A$AP Rocky’s “Peso” is the Truest Representation of His Artistry and Love for Harlem
14 years ago, A$AP Rocky spit out the lyrics to “Peso” in the studio, and they still hold true today. The song, featured on his 2011 mixtape Live. Love. ASAP, proudly declares “I be that pretty motherf*cker, Harlem’s what I’m reppin’.” And it’s not just a catchy line – it perfectly encapsulates the rapper’s approach to his music and his hometown.
Despite his global superstardom, A$AP Rocky has never forgotten his roots in the Concrete Jungle. Just one look at him and you can see Harlem all over him. From his smooth swagger to his lyrical finesse, the energy of uptown New York fuels everything he does.
As he continues to expand his creative pursuits, A$AP Rocky’s role as PUMA’s Creative Director allows him to run wild while still staying true to his own narrative universe. His latest collection, his largest for PUMA yet, pays homage to his city and its rich history.
The collection draws inspiration from Harlem’s early 1900s jazz scene, with A$AP Rocky reviving the Harlem Jazz Renaissance through his disruptive designs. The range includes reimagined footwear silhouettes, menswear and womenswear garments, and accessories that capture the essence of Harlem’s ethos and fashion history.
To celebrate the launch of the collection, A$AP Rocky brought the Harlem energy to Los Angeles for an intimate event. He gave a closer look at the collection, which features faux fur, snakeskin, and leopard print, all paying tribute to Harlem’s past and present. And don’t worry, no minks were harmed in the making of this collection.
The evening continued with a dinner at Beverly Hills’ La Dolce Vita, where guests were treated to live jazz music and a chance to see the collection in action. Models, still in hair rollers from the earlier lookbook shoot, joined in on the celebration, making for a truly harmonious ode to Harlem.
It’s clear that A$AP Rocky’s love for his city runs deep, and his latest collection for PUMA is a testament to that. From the music to the fashion, he continues to tell his story and stay true to himself through the AWGE lens. And with the Don’t Be Dumb conceptual umbrella, he shows no signs of slowing down.
