The Hunt for Chanel’s Next Creative Director May Finally Be Over

According to WWD, the search for a new creative director at Chanel may finally be coming to an end. Sources have revealed that the French fashion house is planning to announce Virginie Viard’s successor in mid-December, and all signs are pointing to Matthieu Blazy for the role.

Blazy, a Paris-born designer, is best known for his work at Bottega Veneta, where he transformed the brand into one of the most sought-after labels in Milan. With Blazy at the helm, the brand has seen a 3% increase in revenue, raking in €836 million EUR in the first half of this year. It’s no wonder he has emerged as a top contender for Chanel’s top seat.

While Chanel, Blazy, and Bottega-owner Kering have yet to comment on the news, it’s clear that the brand is looking for a fresh perspective. The rumor mill has been buzzing since Viard’s departure in June, with names like John Galliano, Hedi Slimane, Jeremy Scott, Sarah Burton, and Marc Jacobs all being thrown into the mix. WWD’s sources claim that Chanel has even interviewed Pieter Mulier, Pierpaolo Piccioli, Jacobs, and Scott for the job.

Blazy may be a newer name in the mix, but he certainly has an impressive resume. He began his career as a men’s designer for Raf Simons in 2007 and later became a head designer at Maison Margiela. His collections were so prominent that he was dubbed “the most famous designer you’ve never heard of” before Galliano took over the House. He then went on to work under Phoebe Philo at Céline and later reunited with Simons at Calvin Klein. In November 2021, Blazy became Bottega Veneta’s creative director.

While it’s not confirmed if Blazy will be Chanel’s next creative director, all eyes are on him as the brand’s announcement draws near. With his impressive background and experience, he could be the perfect fit for the iconic fashion house. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development.
